The Ultimate Fashion Guide

FOR MEN

How to Use This Guide

HAVE FUN! This should not feel overwhelming or stressful. If, at any point it does, please reach out!

There are five main body types to look at when determining what shape you are. This guide will help you (closely) figure out which body type you are.

When it comes to building a wardrobe you love and feel great in knowing how to dress your body type is a game-changing skill.

With each body type, we will go over:

      • Styling tips and tricks to show off all your best assets.
      • Visual examples of clothing items that are effective.
      • How to shop your own closet.
      • Do’s and Don’ts to pay attention to.
      • Getting out of your comfort zone.

      FIRST STEP:

      Determining your body type.

For most accurate results use a sewing measuring tape to measure the width of the following areas:

      • The widest part of your SHOULDERS
      • The fullest part of your BUST
      • The smallest part of your WAIST
      • The widest part of your HIPS

      NEXT STEP

Don’t overthink it! This is NOT a graded final exam. This is just a guide to help you expand outside of your comfort zone using a few tips and tricks.

Select your body type below by using the measurements you have come up with.

*Measurements are just used as a general guideline. Ultimately, if you put on an article of clothing and love how it makes you feel, that’s a win!.

      Select Your Body Type

      triangle

Hips measure larger than shoulders and bust.

Weight tends to carry in the hips, thighs and butt.

      Inverted Triangle

Shoulders and bust measure wider than hips.

      Rectangle

Near equal bust, waist, and hip measurements.

The lack of curves appears like a rectangle.

      Trapezoid

Hips and bust are nearly equal in size, with a much smaller waist measurement.

      Round

Bust measurement is often the largest.

Larger bust, narrow hips, and a full midsection.

      Triangle

Having a triangular body shape doesn’t mean you’re out of shape—it just comes with its own set of challenges when it comes to finding clothes that create a balanced look. Let’s be real: most men’s clothing is designed for the TRAPEZOID shape —broad shoulders and a slim waist.

The key for you is all about finding pieces that bring balance and show off your shape in the best way possible.

      1

      Widest Area

Midsection is wider than the bust and shoulders.

      Goal

Create shape, volume and interest in the upper body/chest

      R

      Focus On

Bright colors and bold prints on top dark colors on the bottom

      Q

      Avoid

Avoid drawing attention to the mid-section and lower body. Skinny-fit pants/jeans, bright colors and interesting belts in the mid section, and tight polo shirts will work against you.

      Do Your Own Search

Here are some keywords/phrases you can use to do your own search.

      Tailored Patterned Blazers for Men

      Vertical Striped Shirts for Men

      Jackets with Structured Shoulders

      Bold Shirts for Men

      Straight Leg Jeans

      Wide Leg Pants

      INVERTED Triangle

This body type usually means your shoulders are significantly wider than any other area – typical of body builders. Wear close-fitting clothes that reduce visual clutter and emphasize the clean, sharp lines of your torso. Add bulk to your trim midriff and lower body while balancing the proportions of your well-developed upper body.

      1

      Widest Area

      The shoulders and upper chest

      Goal

Show off your fit and toned body

      R

      Focus On

Slim fits, larger drop seat (longer crotch inseam), V-necks, and horizontal stripes.

      Q

      Avoid

Avoid drawing more attention to your upper body. Balance is the goal. Scoop necklines, padded shoulder jackets, and busy prints and patterns.

      Shopping for Inverted Triangle

Here are some example search terms that you can use for inspiration or take out all of the guesswork and click on an image to add to your shopping cart. Remember to consider pattern and color when you’re shopping.

      RECTANGLE

This body type usually means you have a tall, slim frame. Use clothing to widen the shoulders and add the effect of a subtle taper from your top-down, creating the illusion of the trapezoid body type.

      1

      Widest Area

Shoulders and chest are relatively even in size  to the waist and hips.

      Goal

Add interest to the upper body – chest and shoulders.

      R

      Focus On

Layers, scarves, and pops of color or prints in the upper body.

      Q

      Avoid

Low-rise pants and oversized or bulky clothing.

      Do Your Own Search

Here are some keywords/phrases you can use to do your own search.

      Horizontal Striped Shirts

      Layered Jackets

      Scarves

      Flannels

      Crewneck Jumper

      Patterned Shirt

      Slim Pants

      round

In a larger male with a round or oval body type, the center of the torso is larger than the shoulders and hips. The rest of the frame of the body tends to reflect this as well.

      1

      Widest Area

The center of the torso is larger than the shoulders and the hips.

      Goal

      Slim and frame the body

      R

      Focus On

Simple and dark. Solid colors work well but, the right pattern can work strategically.

      Q

      Avoid

Tight clothing, belts, patterns that draw attention to the mid-section, horizontal stripes, and high rise pants.

      Shopping for round

      Do Your Own Search

Here are some keywords/phrases you can use to do your own search.

      Vertical Striped Shirts

      Suspenders

      Single Breasted Jackets

      Solid Color Shirts

Straight Leg Jeans – Relaxed Fit

      V Pattern for Large Men

      trapezoid

This body type tends to be what clothing designers design for. It’s considered the “average” build. If you fall into the trapezoid shape, you’re in luck! Most off the rack clothing is made for you! Your waist is the narrowest part on your body and your build gradually gets wider from the start of the rib cage up to the shoulders.

      1

      Widest Area

The shoulders are the widest but not as significant as the inverted triangle.

      Goal

Highlight your fit and trimmed shape.

      R

      Focus On

Accent pieces to help you stand out against “average.” Designs that elongate your body to help you appear taller – more than “average” height.

      Q

      Avoid

Bulky clothing, horizontal stripes, and loose clothing that doesn’t fit you well.
